ECOMX installs a lot of UniFi. Hotels, lodges and offices with more than one cupboard of network kit are where it earns its place: one controller, the same SSIDs, a view of which access point is actually hurting. That is the practical reason, not a fan club.
It is the wrong purchase when a four-person office has a single fibre line and someone sells them a rack because the controller screen looks like a product. Two well-placed access points and a firewall you understand will beat a tray of hardware nobody monitors.
Where UniFi struggles is the same place every Wi-Fi struggles. Channel planning in a Sandton office park, a lodge with stone walls, a warehouse with metal roof. The controller will draw you a map. It will not walk the passage. A site survey is still a person with a laptop.
We often put pfSense at the edge and UniFi on the switches and access points. Guest wireless, staff, cameras and tills need different networks. If those VLAN numbers do not match on both boxes, the system is two systems. Write them down.
Power is the other local problem. An access point that reboots every time the lights dip, in a passage with no UPS, is a coverage gap you will blame on 'the Wi-Fi brand'. Feed the important ones.
If you are choosing now, ask for a network health check rather than a shoot-out of logos. We will say if UniFi is the right fit after we see the building. The offices are in Nieuw Muckleneuk and Sandown.
